Head of the Sheikh Zuweid Center and City, Saleh Abu Houli, announced in a statement that the city is undergoing preparations to establish a field hospital in Sheikh Zuweid for Palestinians, which comes under the directives of the North Sinai governor and Egypt’s higher political leadership.

He added that the Sheikh Zuweid hospital will be fully equipped and ready to receive the injured. The hospital has all the necessary medical equipment for operations, critical care, and emergencies, as well as the necessary medical supplies. In addition to the field hospital, the Sheikh Zuweid Hospital is also capable of accommodating large numbers of wounded, housing a total of 300 beds.

Once the injured are allowed to enter Egypt, the hospital will be ready to receive them, Abu Houli said.

Since Israel’s bombing campaign against Palestinians in Gaza, Egyptian Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar has ordered for all of North Sinai’s hospitals to be prepared to receive cases from Gaza, and to ensure an abundance stock of medical supplies and medications.

THE CONFLICT SO FAR

After a surprise attack conducted on 7 October by Hamas on a number of southern Israeli towns which resulted in the deaths of an estimated 1,405 people and more than 220 being taken ‘hostage’ by Hamas, Israel launched a retaliatory bombing campaign against what it describes as ‘terrorist targets’ in the Gaza Strip.

So far, more than 5,971 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip — over 1,000 of them children — and 16,297 others injured. Meanwhile 91 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank and 1,250 have been injured.

The priority of the Egyptian government since the beginning of the conflict has been deescalation and the securing of a path for aid to enter the Gaza Strip through the Rafah crossing. Israel bombed the crossing at least four times, and three aid conveys have crossed to Gaza so far.

Most Western countries, with the United States at the forefront, have expressed unconditional support for Israel, despite the steadily rising death toll in Gaza. Meanwhile, Arab governments have called for an immediate ceasefire.
