The United Kingdom (UK) has reacted to the indefinite suspension of Twitter by President Muhammadu Buhari-led government.

UK High Commissioner in Nigeria, Gill Atkinson, said the UK Government kicked against the Federal Government’s action, saying, it amounts to suppression of freedom of speech of Nigerians.

Atkinson said: “Nigerians have the right to freedom of speech and the government must not suppress it.

“All Nigerians have the right to freedom of speech and the responsibility not to misuse that right.

“Any action taken by Government must be measured, proportionate and not suppress basic freedoms.”

It would be recalled that President Buhari had on Friday ordered the immediate suspension of Twitter operations in Nigeria.

In a statement by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, the Federal Government, claimed that Nigerians were using Twitter to perpetuate activities inimical to the corporate existence of Nigeria.
