Castellon sign Soriano
Spanish second tier side Castellon have announced the signing of former Barcelona and Red Bull Salzburg striker Jonathan Soriano on a short-term contract.

Soriano was a free agent after leaving second-tier side Girona whom he’d joined from Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal.
The Spaniard has had a understated career playing the majority of his time in Austria with Red Bull Salzburg having come through the Espanyol youth system eventually signing for Barcelona and scoring frequently for their B side under Luis Enrique.
Red Bull Salzburg pounced on him in 2012 and he became one of Europe’s highest goalscorers, eventually moving to China to play alongside Jonathan Vieira at Beijing Guoan and then to the aforementioned Al Hilal.
Rivalling Messi and Ronaldo
Soriano has scored an incredible amount of goals throughout his career and was at one point rivalling the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for the European Golden Shoe tally. 29 in 12/13, 48 in 13/14, 46 in 14/15 and 32 in 15/16.
Unfortunately, with the way that the system works, the Spanish striker was never in a position which he could win the coveted Golden Shoe because goals scored in the Austrian Bundesliga have a lower weighting to that of goals scored by players in the likes of La Liga – which Ronaldo and Messi were both playing in at the time.

Speaking with Soriano in 2018, he was asked about this and was bullish in his response as to how his goals should be viewed anywhere in the world.
“I understand that the Austrian league is not at the level of that of Spain, England, Germany… but whoever understands football knows that it is not easy to score goals anywhere,” he said.
Now 35 and still scoring, Soriano’s career was never reliant on pace but his positional awareness, movement and clinical finishing. All attributes which have lengthened his career and maybe can save Castellon from the drop.
