Referee Lee Mason will not be present to take on 4th-official duties for Liverpool’s meeting with Sheffield United later today, it has been confirmed.
Chaos at the Hawthorns
The name of official Mason of course took centre stage in the English media on Saturday.
This came on the back of Brighton’s Premier League meeting with West Brom at the Hawthorns.
Shortly before the half-hour mark, a bizarre sequence saw visitors Brighton appear to take the lead, when Lewis Dunk’s quick thinking saw the stopper pick out the corner of the Baggies’ net with a quickly taken free-kick.
Mason, however, had other ideas.
In turn, the goal was initially ruled out, before being awarded, and then, amid farcical scenes, ruled out once more:
Mad scenes in West Brom v Brighton.
Lee Mason disallows a goal from a quick free kick. He claims he didn’t blow his whistle. The replays show he did blow the whistle. So VAR allows the goal. Then VAR checks for an offside. Then they take another freekick. pic.twitter.com/IpvLcQfNA6

Brighton going on to miss a pair of penalties as the clash wore on only served to deepen Mason’s woes, as the Englishman was widely blamed for costing Graham Potter’s men a potentially crucial point.
Ruled out
Mason, though, despite his horror show 24 hours ago, was actually due to be back in action this evening.
The referee was scheduled to take his place as part of the 4th official team for the day’s late Premier League kick-off, when Sheffield United welcome Liverpool to Bramall Lane.
But, as outlined above, this will in fact not prove to be the case.
The official word on the situation, however, is not that Mason has been pulled from duty to his performance on Saturday.
Instead, it is claimed that the official has picked up an injury:
Lee Mason has been replaced as fourth official for Sheffield United against Liverpool on Sunday due to injury.
