Celtic bound? Sheffield United confirm Chris Wilder departure

Chris Wilder

Premier League strugglers Sheffield United have this evening confirmed the exit of manager Chris Wilder, by mutual consent.

Wilder moves on

The campaign to date has of course proven nothing short of a disaster for the Blades.

On the back of a stellar first season back in the top-flight, which saw the Bramall Lane outfit secure a hugely impressive 9th-placed finish, Wilder and co. since struggled to string together any sort of consistent stretch of positive results.

In fact, United’s failure to secure a victory in any of their first 17 outings of the campaign saw the club set an altogether unwanted Premier League record.

The Blades, to their credit, have since managed 4 wins from their ensuing 11 Premier League outings, but even this leaves them cut adrift at the English top-flight’s basement, a full 12 points from safety.

And such woes, in turn, had resulted in inevitable speculation surrounding the future of Chris Wilder of late.

Despite having enjoyed a historic 5-year stint in Sheffield, the writing had begun to look very much on the wall for the English tactician this week, on the back of yet another home defeat at the hands of Southampton.

In turn, after reports began to mount on Friday that a change at the helm was imminent at Bramall Lane, the news has this evening been confirmed.

Wilder and Sheffield United have parted ways with immediate effect, by what has been described as ‘mutual consent’:

Celtic bound?

Wilder, though, may not remain out of work for long.

The 53-year-old is widely reported to be in demand at Celtic Park, with the Bhoys on the lookout for a new boss after seeing Rangers dominate en route to the Scottish Premiership title.

In fact, it has even been claimed that the delay in confirmation of Wilder’s Bramall Lane exit came with Sheffield United having been demanding compensation for their boss from the Scottish giants.

It now remains to be seen whether a deal is indeed struck between the Celtic hierarchy, and the experienced tactician.
