Cesar Azpilicueta quizzed on future plans & previews Chelsea’s clash with Atletico

Atletico Madrid vs Chelsea

Chelsea are set to get their European campaign back underway tomorrow evening.

The Blues dominated their Champions League group, which included Sevilla, Stade Rennais and Krasnodar.

As a result, Chelsea put themselves in a good position to be handed a favourable draw for the last-16.

However, the Londoners, in the end, were handed arguably the toughest possible draw of the sides to have topped their groups, against Spanish outfit Atletico Madrid.

Atletico are enjoying a superb campaign, and currently sit top of La Liga, having lost just twice all season.

The first meeting between the two sides will take place on Tuesday, and should have been at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

Owing to the pandemic, though, the clash has since been moved to Bucharest.

Azpilicueta on his future & Atletico Madrid

Ahead of Tuesday’s game, meanwhile, Chelsea star Cesar Azpilicueta has opened up on a number of topics.

Alongside Thomas Tuchel, Azpilicueta spoke to the media during a pre-Atletico press conference.

And the Spaniard was asked what kind of challenge he expects Diego Simeone’s men to pose, to which he responded:

“Atletico are a very solid team. They are top of the league in Spain, and that is well deserved. They have got great results, although last weekend they lost at home.

“But we know we are facing a very strong team with experience in the competition. They have been working together for a few years and we have to try to play our game.

“We are playing away from home, but it is very important we try to play our game, to control the game to create chances, and to be clinical in front.”

In a separate recent interview, meanwhile, the defender was also quizzed on his future plans, though he gave little away in explaining:

“I am very happy at Chelsea. I don’t like to look too far ahead.

“I enjoy the moment, I have the ambition to leave the club at as high a level as I can and I am going to train and play with the hope of continuing to do important things. Hopefully that lasts a long time.”
