Fabinho returns in midfield and Roberto Firmino not in the squad for Liverpool for RB Leipzig second leg

Team News

Jurgen Klopp has made five changes to his side for tonight’s second leg in Budapest against RB Leipzig, in a game in which he hopes his team can regain some confidence.

Liverpool are ahead 2-0 in the tie, thanks to goals from Sadio Mane and Mo Salah in the first leg back on the 16th of February. The victory was one of only two wins in their last 8 games and they will be hoping that the Champions League offers them some respite from their appalling league form.

Roberto Firmino is left out all together and Fabinho returns to the starting line-up alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ozan Kabak, and Sadio Mane.

Fabinho returns to his preferred midfield position tonight alongside Gini Wijnaldum and Thiago Alcantara. He has played much of the season as an emergency centre-back.

His inclusion in midfield means Ozan Kabak returns to partner Nat Phillips, who is making his Champions League debut, in the centre of the defence.

Disaster if go out

Liverpool’s defence of the Premier League has been nothing short of a disaster and the Champions League remains the clubs best hope of silverware.

Speaking on Jurgen Klopp’s team, former player John Arne Riise, who of course was part of the Liverpool team who won the competition in 2005, has said that he thinks it will be a “disaster” if his team crash out of the competition.

“The main target for the league now is a Champions League spot. They need to get that, it’s so important and it will be a disaster if they don’t…” said Riise.

“The Champions League is a way of getting away from all the pressure at home. In that one game, Liverpool can beat anybody. Liverpool with a 2-0 lead can go into that game with confidence and know that if they play with their normal style, they will get through to the next round.”

“Nobody likes to play against Liverpool because if Liverpool have a good day, they beat anybody. First they have to get through against Leipzig and then they’ll take anybody (in the quarter-finals) and look forward to that.”
