Bayern pair dropped by Germany

The door has been opened for both Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels to return to the German national side ahead of the European Championships. Muller specifically has enjoyed a stellar season at Bayern Munich, and remains easily one of the national side’s greatest attacking assets, despite his lack of inclusion over recent years.

The pair were effectively told that they would no longer be considered for selection on the back of Germany’s disappointing exit from the Russian World Cup.

Bayern were not pleased with the timing of the announcement, amid Bundesliga and Champions League commitments at the time. Both players were likely mentally affected by the situation, which Bayern publicly responded to with the following notice:

“We do not comment on sporting decisions of the national coach, the nomination of the squad of the national team is solely the responsibility of Joachim Low.”

“However, we believe the timing and circumstances of the announcement of this decision to the players and to the public is questionable. The last international match of the German national team took place on November 19, 2018.

“The fact that the players and the public were informed three months later, just ahead of important matches for FC Bayern next Saturday in the fight for the Bundesliga title against VfL Wolfsburg and a few days before the decisive second leg in the round of 16 of the Champions League next Wednesday against Liverpool, irritates us.”

Low opens the door

This season, Muller has recorded 10 goals and 11 assists in the league alone. In turn, amid the struggles of Kai Havertz at Chelsea, Joachim Low has seemingly felt the need to consider his reinstatement to the national side.

Hummels, too, could come in, with Robin Koch having suffered with a number of injury issues at Leeds United this season, whilst the Dortmund centre-half continues as a top performer.

“I always said the change in the squad should take place without disruptions. The pandemic resulted in a special situation where I question everything again ahead of the Euros to achieve success. We’ll see in May,” said Low when asked about a possible return for the pair.

Germany have a very difficult European Championship group to navigate, alongside Portugal, France and Hungary. The threat of another tournament disappointment has appeared to sparked change, beyond purely the pandemic’s impact, for Low.
