Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has called into question the ‘pointless’ nature of some of Leeds United’s efforts off the ball, revealing that he could never play for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
Bielsa and co. making an impression
Leeds’ performances have of course proven one of the talking points of the Premier League season to date.
This comes with the Whites, on the back of a return to the top-flight for the first time since 2004, having displayed absolutely no fear in approaching almost every one of their outings to this point in the campaign with the mindset of attack first, worry later.
Such efforts have seen Marcelo Bielsa’s men rack up a host of impressive victories, particularly over the likes of West Brom and Aston Villa.
In turn, Leeds currently sit 10th in the English top-flight table, above the likes of Arsenal and Wolves.
‘Stand still for one minute!’
Leeds’ impressive term to date, however, has not been based solely upon silky football.
Central too has been the Peacocks’ relentless work off the ball, a factor which has left a host of sides simply overwhelmed by the Elland Road outfit.
This of course comes as a trademark of a Marcelo Bielsa side, with the Argentine having long placed the highest imaginable physical demands on his teams.
As outlined above, however, such sterling efforts when out of possession have not quite managed to impress all onlookers.
In fact, some have been left to wonder whether Leeds may in fact be better served employing a more measured approach, in a bid to make their own attacking efforts more sustainable.
One such individual, meanwhile, comes in the form of Jonjo Shelvey.
Newcastle star Shelvey faced off against Bielsa and co. late last month, with the Magpies having been condemned to a 2-1 defeat.
The ex-English international, however, was none too enamoured with the relentless work-rate of the eventual victors, pinpointing the efforts of summer addition Rodrigo in particular as ‘pointless’:
‘We obviously played Leeds at St James’ Park about a month ago now, and that Rodrigo fella was in the middle,’ Shelvey explained during an interview with the Studs Up podcast.
‘He was meant to be playing centre midfield and he was just all over the place.’
‘I said to him, ‘geez can you just stand still for one minute, because you’re just running around like a nutcase.’
‘Some of it was just pointless running as well, and he goes, ‘I must do, I must do, my manager says I must do.’
The Magpies midfielder even went on to add that he ‘couldn’t play for Leeds’.
