Liverpool want to sign Real Betis’ Aïssa Mandi on free transfer

A recent report from Spain has credited Liverpool with an interest in Real Betis’ Aïssa Mandi.

Who is Aïssa Mandi?

Mandi joined Betis in 2016 from French outfit Stade Remis.

Betis are believed to have paid less than £3m to bring the stopper to La Liga.

Mandi has since notched over 160 appearances for the Spanish outfit, across which he has scored eight and assisted three.

The centre-back, now 29, has once again proven a key figure for Los Verdiblancos this term, even captaining the club on a number of occasions.

Mandi has also made over 50 appearances for Algeria, and played a key role in his country’s clinching of the African Cup of Nations in 2019, managing the full 90 minutes in a 1-0 win over Senegal in the tournament’s finale.

Liverpool linked with Aïssa Mandi

Come October, though, Mandi will be 30 years of age. So, some Liverpool fans may be questioning why their club are being linked with the stopper.

However, such speculation makes a lot more sense when you take into account the fact that Mandi is actually out of contract with Betis in the summer.

This means that, if he doesn’t sign a new deal, Liverpool will be free to find a pre-contract agreement with the defender.

And, according to a report from Spanish outlet Larazon, both the Reds, and Serie A outfit AC Milan, are keen to ‘take advantage’ of the situation.

The report adds that Liverpool looked at Mandi in January, with a potential free transfer a ‘very attractive option’.
