Mason Mount wins it for Chelsea as Liverpool create a piece of unwanted club history

Unwanted record

In losing 1-0 to Chelsea this evening, Liverpool have created a piece of unwanted history as they have lost their 5th home league game in a row for the first time in their 129 year history. They have now not won at Anfield since the 16th of December.

Liverpool did not have a single shot on target until the 84th minute and even subbed off Premier League leading scorer Mo Salah after 62 minutes.

Whilst the injuries the Reds have suffered have had a huge impact on the team, their defence of their title has plunged to new depths and members of the media made their opinions known on social media.

The defeat saw Chelsea go four points clear of the defending champions in the race for the Champions League.

Chelsea took the lead in the 42nd minute as Mason Mount chased down N’Golo Kante’s long ball over the top, cut inside and placed a brilliant finish into the bottom corner.

Chelsea were fully deserving of their half time lead and Timo Werner was a constant menace to the Liverpool back line and had a goal disallowed, and he probably should have added to Mason Mount’s fine strike.

The second half continued in much the same vain, with Chelsea high pressing and hitting Liverpool on the break.

Jurgen Klopp said of the defeat:

New manager bounce

Whilst it was a night to forget for Liverpool, Chelsea end the evening in fourth place and their resurgence under Thomas Tuchel continues.

Thomas Tuchel was very pleased with his team post and their climb up the Premier League table.

Chelsea travel to Leeds on the weekend and will look to maintain their hold on a Champions League place.

Liverpool face another London side as they travel to Arsenal and will be desperate to put an end to their poor form and get their season back on track.
