Sergio Aguero ‘close’ to free agent Barcelona switch

Word doing the rounds in the Spanish media this weekend suggests that Barcelona are on the verge of tieing up a summer deal for Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero.

Back on the scoresheet

Argentine international Aguero has of course endured a testing campaign to date.

Amid a host of fitness issues, the veteran hitman has been restricted to just a handful of Premier League starts.

The latest of these came yesterday evening, when Aguero was utilised from the off, alongside Gabriel Jesus, in a meeting with Fulham at Craven Cottage.

And the 32-year-old went on to take full advantage of the rare recent opportunity afforded to him, netting from the penalty spot on the hour mark, to bring an end to a lengthy wait for a league goal:

Barca bound?

Whilst Aguero’s readiness to contribute once more was made clear 24 hours ago, however, it must be noted that City, in his absence, have not exactly struggled this season.

The Sky Blues are still going strong across no less than four competitions, and look primed to wrestle back the Premier League title from Liverpool over the weeks ahead.

This comes with the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne and the aforementioned Jesus having all stepped up in front of goal, in Aguero’s absence.

As such, mounting speculation that the Argentine could be allowed to depart the Etihad in the summer hasn’t come as too much of a surprise.

Aguero’s current terms in Manchester are set to expire come the campaign’s end, with little word having been forthcoming regarding the possibility of a new deal.

And, as outlined above, this weekend, one potential landing spot for the prolific attacker has been revealed.

Not only that, but it is in fact suggested that Aguero is ‘close’ to reaching a full agreement with the club in question.

As per a report from Spanish outlet AS, recently reappointed Barcelona president Joan Laporta has convinced the City star to make the move to the Camp Nou on a free transfer.

A contract through 2023 is awaiting the veteran in Catalunya, with Aguero’s arrival set to be announced once Laporta officially takes his seat back in office.

The move could also play a role in swaying Lionel Messi towards remaining at the Camp Nou, with the 6-time Ballon d’Or winner known to be close friends with Aguero. In fact, Messi is the godfather of his international teammate’s son, Benjamin.
