Solskjaer tempers Man United transfer expectations: ‘We have to be realistic’

Man United need to improve

2020/21 has once again showcased that Manchester United are not the finished article.

The Reds Devils do look to be improving, and could still finish the season with some form of silverware.

However, if United truly want to be able to compete with the likes of Manchester City, there are a number of areas they need to improve upon.

Harry Maguire needs a new partner at the back, an experienced right-winger probably needs to be brought in, Anthony Martial probably needs replacing as United’s no.9 and a defensive midfielder, similar to Nemanja Matic, could be signed.

Solskjaer on transfers

As a result, Man United fans were probably hoping for a fairly busy summer transfer window.

However, speaking ahead of his side’s meeting with Crystal Palace, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has played down United’s ability to spend big.

The Norwegian stated that Man United must be realistic and the pandemic has affected everyone:

“[The pandemic] is definitely affecting everyone in football. Of course the lack of income, the finances has affected everyone.

“We have to be realistic and responsible in the way we do our business both on and off the pitch. There are improvements on the training ground, stadium – we have to look at the whole picture.

“Where can we spend the money? And how much is there? It’s just the real world now. It has changed.”

And when pushed on whether the financial situation would affect his rebuilding plans, Solskjaer stated:

“You can look at it different ways [with a] rebuild. We also have players in the academy that we now can maybe give opportunities.

“All clubs in the world are going through the same situation so it’s no different for other clubs than for us. I think there’s just going to be less and less transfers happening in the world of football with all these changes.”
