Why Bruno Fernandes winning PFA Player of the Year award would cost Man United around £4.2m

Bruno Fernandes impressing

The signing of Bruno Fernandes has proven to be one of the best bits of business Manchester United have done in years.

The Portuguese arrived at Old Trafford from Sporting CP in January of 2020, and has since gone on to completely dominate the English top-flight.

Fernandes, of course, played a key role in United securing a Champions League berth last term.

Suggesting that the Red Devils have looked like something of a one-man team over stretches to this point in 2020/21, meanwhile, wouldn’t really be an understatement.

In total, Fernandes has netted 22 and assisted 13 in 40 outings across all competitions this season.

The former Sporting standout has also won a staggering five Man United Player of the Month awards since his arrival, as well as four Premier League POTM prizes:

Man United may have to pay Sporting £4.2m

Whilst such form is obviously great for Manchester United, it may also be set to cost the Red Devils a decent chunk of change.

The reason for this is the existence of a clause in the deal which United struck when they signed Fernandes from Sporting.

As per a report from The Times, the Manchester powerhouse stumped up an initial £46.6m to bring the midfielder to Old Trafford.

However, a number of add-ons were included in the agreement, one of which related to individual awards.

Sporting are said to be entitled to an extra €5m – which is around £4.2m – if Fernandes either wins the PFA Player of the Year award, or is included in the top-three for the Ballon d’Or, whilst a United player.
