Why Gabriel Martinelli is missing from Arsenal’s matchday squad to face Tottenham

Arsenal vs Tottenham

Sunday’s marquee Premier League match is set to play out later this afternoon.

The clash will take place at the Emirates, in the form of the final North London derby of the season, on the domestic front anyway.

The sides head into the tie in similar form. Arsenal have won two, drawn one and lost two of their last five, whilst Spurs have won three and lost two (in the league).

However, the capital rivals have very different ambitions in the English top-flight at present.

Spurs will kick-off on Sunday sitting 7th in the table, one point off the top-six, and six points off 4th, whilst boasting two games in hand on Chelsea.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are languishing down in 10th place, with their best hope of securing European football for next term now via the Europa League.

Despite not having too much on the line in the league, though, Mikel Arteta and co. will nevertheless no doubt be desperate to get one over on their bitter rivals today.

Why Martinelli is out of Arsenal’s squad to face Tottenham

Ahead of Sunday’s game, an update on one of the selection choices made by Mikel Arteta has been provided online.

Gabriel Martinelli was a key figure for Arsenal during the first half of last season. But despite having returned from injury at the back end of 2020, the Brazilian has since been used sparingly by Arteta.

And now, David Ornstein – who also confirmed that the forward will not be in the Gunners’ matchday squad on Sunday – has provided an explanation for the youngster’s absence.

According to the reliable Ornstein, Martinelli is fit, and doing well in training, but misses out against Spurs simply as a selection decision:
