Why RB Leipzig owe Liverpool over £1 million ahead of CL 2nd-leg clash

Premier League champions Liverpool are set for an imminent cash injection, courtesy of none other than their upcoming opponents in the Champions League.

Advantage Liverpool

European football’s elite club competition is of course set to get back underway this week.

Amongst a tantalising fixture list – including Juventus vs Porto and Barcelona vs PSG – Liverpool will play out the 2nd-leg of their Last-16 showdown with German outfit RB Leizpig.

Jurgen Klopp’s men will head into the clash as overwhelming favourites to advance, on the back of a comfortable victory in the tie’s opener last month.

Goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane early in the 2nd-half saw the Reds emerge on the right side of a 2-0 scoreline, to put one foot in the Champions League’s quarter-finals.

Leipzig to pay up

The first meeting between Liverpool and Leipzig of course played out in Hungary, at the Puskas Arena, rather than its originally planned venue in Leipzig.

This came due to ongoing Covid-19 restrictions in Germany.

Wednesday’s 2nd-leg clash, though, will too be played out in Budapest, amid UK travel restrictions which dictate that any individual arriving in the country must quarantine for 14 days.

The ‘root cause’ for the venue change, however, is in fact the 14-day quarantining law in Germany, whereby any individual returning from a country affected by Covid mutations must enter a two-week period in self isolation.

This comes with such regulations having been in place prior to the aforementioned UK rules.

In turn, the costs stemming from the stadium change, and everything that comes along with the move, must be shouldered by Leipzig, rather than Liverpool.

As such, as per the Liverpool Echo, the Bundesliga high-flyers owe their upcoming opponents a considerable £1.3 million.
